I am loving this lens. I’ve only had it for a weekend, but over that time I’ve taken several hundred shots with it. I went to a convention and the photo opportunities there are numerous! This is excellent in dark lighting. Pictures I had taken in our hotel room where just a lamp was on and the curtains pulled turned out bright and clear, and that was just with the focus assist light on the camera, not the actual flash. Portraits I took at the convention look amazing. The person came out clear and sharp while the background was nicely blurred. This is the first lens I’ve used without any zoom control on it and I was worried it would be awkward for me, but I adapted very quickly to it. I expected that over the course of the convention weekend that I’d be changing out my lenses periodically, but this lens lived on my camera the whole time. I love it
Best lens for Nikon D5100 camera – 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G
Have price up to $399, however this lens is best for this price. One thing I will say first and foremost is that every lens is different. Minute variations that fall within quality control standards on a lens, combined with variations that fall within quality control standards on a camera body, may mean that one lens may perform differently than another of the same type, or perform differently from camera to camera.
I purchased a refurbished example of this lens as my second lens beside the AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens that came with my (again refurbished) Nikon D5000. I had to return the lens immediately as its autofocus and vibration reduction were not functional, but this was covered under warranty and was hassle-free. I was very pleased with the results this lens gave me on my D5000, delivering to my then-inexperienced eyes sharp photos and long reach. On my D7000 I have not had the same results – while focusing on distant targets shooting at 300mm, the images do not feel as sharp. Maybe this is due to the lens resolving well enough for the D5000′s 12 megapixels but not well enough for the D7000′s 16 megapixels, or maybe this is due to the variances mentioned above. When I purchased a used AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G, the difference in sharpness was great enough that cropping the final image yielded higher quality. Additionally, the autofocus speed of this lens pales in comparison to the 70-200 and many other internal focusing (IF) lenses.

I still have this lens and sometimes use it. I am not one to be bothered by carrying a heavy lens, so I bring my 70-200mm f/2.8 or an even larger old manual focus 50-300mm f/4.5 with me even while hiking. However, an advantage this lens has is that it focuses as close as 4.6 feet at 300mm, with a reproduction ratio of 0.28x. For those unfamiliar with this term, reproduction ratio represents how large an object is projected onto the sensor vs. its real size. Basically, you can take a subject that is about 4″ (~10cm) across, and when you are at the closest focus distance and 300mm focal length, that subject will fill the resulting image.

A more unusual application of this lens is with a Kenko teleconverter. Nikon teleconverters can only be used on certain Nikon lenses. While they may not be of as high a quality, Kenko teleconverters have the advantage of being usable on any Nikon or 3rd party lens. I have used this lens, completely out of curiousity, with a 1.4x Kenko teleconverter to give me a 420mm f/8 lens. For whatever reason the different focal length and aperture information does not display correctly in the EXIF information, but this lens does otherwise work with the teleconverter. The camera even attempts autofocus in spite of the tiny aperture, and with correct focus technique you can achieve focus. I have not attempted contrast-detect (live view) autofocus with this lens, but if I do that I will update this review. Shooting at 420mm and f/8 certainly does not give you a fast enough lens for moving subjects, but it is a fairly inexpensive method of reaching a 420mm on a DX camera, which is equivalent to a 630mm lens on a full frame camera. Though the lens is limited to f/8, I am pretty sure you will not get up to / above 400mm focal length with vibration reduction and the chance of autofocus for a cost anywhere near as low as this lens and a Kenko teleconverter. Shoot, you could even try their 2x teleconverter to get a 600mm f/11 lens if you really wanted to try that!
All in all, while this lens is no longer of great appeal to me, it is still a good lens for its price if you are using a DX-format camera.

I had many doubts in buying this lens, I wasn’t convinced of the advantages of a high aperture lens, also there are some other options on the same price range offered by Nikon. I decided not to buy it from Amazon, instead I went to a local camera dealer to test it by myself and be sure if that is what I wanted. I tried the 50mm 1.8 and this lens and the results are pretty similar however; for the focal distance this one is more confortable to me. Also I tried the 50mm 1.4 !!! That is a wonderful lens, but price (+400) I decided to buy this one. It is very nice for portrait photography I use it with a D7000 and the results are incredible regardless of the lighting situation, this lens performs excellent in low light conditions. Will give it a 6 stars if possible.

55-200mm f/4-5.6G lens for Nikon D5100 DSLR camera
This one is a fantastic lens for it’s price. I bought it four years back along with Nikon D40, my first entry into DSLR. It had 18-55mm kit lens and as a beginner, I didn’t wannna spend a lot of money on additional lenses. I thought this would complement the kit lens to take nice Bokeh effect pictures and zoo animal pictures. I’m glad to tell that this already gave me many wonderful shots to cherish for ever.(Check out my uploaded pictures to have an idea about what this lens can do)
Remember that this is good for well lit environment and hence indoor photos may not come great unless properly lit. Cranking up ISO would requite a lot of post-processing of the image to improve the look. VR for high zoom is very helpful since I can use a slower shutter speed to increase the exposure. The main problem I face is the inconvenience of carrying and changing lenses. But I do recognize that a 18-200 mm lens would cost much more (more than 4 times the cost of this for Nikon brand and quality. Also it supposedly won’t give as much quality as individual lenses).
Bottom line: If you are a budget photographer and not into hi-fi photography, this would be sufficient to take nice pictures in well lit environments. Buy a bigger bag for carrying it around with your camera.
